Fell Swoop delivered his rivals a crushing three length defeat in the Selleys BM75 (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens over the weekend, and trainer Matthew Dale is confident the result points towards the classy four-year-old figuring as a serious prospect for a race like the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) during the 2015 Spring Carnival.
Fell Swoop has posted an impressive five wins and one minor through only seven career starts so far, and while returning for a disappointing fourth in the Bledisloe Cup Festival BM80 (1000m) on July 11th, more than redeemed the run on Saturday.
Confirming the classy son of Not A Single Doubt has come through the performance well, Dale is confident the patience his team has had with the short course specialist will pay dividends in races like the 2015 Concorde Stakes.
“He’s a very raw product, we’ve been patient with him and that patience is paying off as you can see,” Dale to The Sunday Telegraph.
“The improvement he has made at home in the last three weeks has been unbelievable and I saw it today at the races when he saddled up.
“In hindsight, it (first-up failure) was probably a blessing because on a Heavy 9 he didn’t have a hard run first-up. He came back great but didn’t have a gut buster.
“There’s no point in jumping too far too soon, he’s still working it out.
“The Sydney and Melbourne Carnivals present after his next run and we’ll work it out then.”
Jockey Blake Shinn partnered Fell Swoop in Rosehill start and was equally impressed by the gelding’s performance.
“Although we were wide we were always in control,” Shinn said after the race.
“He did it tough and wide but I loved the way he zoomed into the race and was very strong to the line. It sets him up nicely for the races ahead.”
Debuting to racing for second in a Wagga maiden over 1000m in early 2014, Fell Swoop failed to miss a beat through a summer and early autumn campaign this year; posting a perfect four wins from as many starts.
