Charging home to win the TAB Rewards 3.y.o+ (1200m) with relative ease over the weekend, Oakfield Commands has undoubtedly hit career-best form over four starts this time in, and may warrant a step up in class to an event such as the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Royal Randwick on September 6th.
Unlucky to finish second when blocked for a run in the final straight of the Candana Bathrooms 3.y.o+ (1200m) first-up on May 10th, Oakfield Commands charged home to beat a talented field in the Winter Dash (1200m) on June 21st and finished a fighting fourth in the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) in his only other start prior to the TAB Rewards 3.y.o+.
Thrilled with the way apprentice jockey Lester Grace handled the Commands gelding over his three most recently starts, trainer Gerald Ryan is yet to confirm a path for Oakfield Commands through spring, but revealed he is pleased with his continually building form.
“I don’t think it is Oakfield Commands’ pattern to lead, but there was no speed in the race so we wanted to be positive early,” Ryan told The Daily Telegraph of the seven-year-old’s most recent run.
“I knew this horse would keep finding because he is very tough and the kid rode him well.
“He is a good, honest horse; tries his guts out.”
Securing an impressive total of eight wins and 10 minor places from just 24 competitive starts so far, Oakfield Commands began his racing career under the guidance of trainer Darren Smith before transferring to the care of Ryan following the Candana Bathrooms 3.y.o+ this season.
Generally hitting a higher standard of form over events early in each given race calendar over which he has contested, Ryan is hopeful of a continued standout preparation for Oakfield Commands this time in.
