CONCORDE STAKES
Sydney is host to many top group racing events during its annual Spring Racing Carnival held from August right through until the end of the year. Although not nearly as famous as the Spring Carnival in Victoria, there are still plenty of great betting opportunities during this time in Sydney. The first Gr.1 event to take place at the carnival is the $1 million Golden Rose, which officially kicks off the carnival. A healthy sized crowd and many eager punters gather at the picturesque Rosehill Gardens racecourse for this exciting race day, which also includes the Gr.3 Concorde Stakes.
The Concorde Stakes is the only other group race held on Golden Rose Day at the end of August and so the betting action on this event is always exciting. Other races held at the meeting are the listed Sheraco Stakes and the listed Premier’s Cup. Run over the sprint distance of 1100m, the Concorde Stakes offers a purse of $125 000 and is a quality handicap race for horses three-years-old and up. The Concorde Stakes and all other events held at Rosehill or Canterbury Park racecourses are conducted by the Sydney Turf Club (STC), and the Australian Jockey Club (AJC) conducts all the Sydney Carnival races held at either Randwick or Warwick Farm racecourses.

For punters keen to check out the form of the entries for the Concorde Stakes, there are a few good races held earlier in the Sydney Spring Carnival that are a good indication for the Concorde; including the listed race, the Show County Quality Handicap (1200m) held the week before. Runners in the Concorde Stakes have a number of options after the race to continue their campaigns. Many will go on to run in the Gr.2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) held a fortnight later. Afterwards, depending on the quality and form the horse, they may be aimed at the Gr.1 Epson Handicap held at Randwick in October; others travel to Caulfield in Melbourne for events such as the Gr.2 Caulfield Sprint.
One of the newer Sydney races, the Concorde Stakes was first held in 1989 as a Listed race run over 1000m; Alphine Flyer won the inaugural race. In 1992 the race length was increased to 1100m, and it reached its Group 3 status a few years later in 1997. The race was not held in 1996 or 2007. Notable winners include fine sprinters Guineas (1999), Armidale (1997) and Joanne (1991). The race record at the current distance (1100m) is held by Just Awesome (1994) who won in a time of 1:02.7. Prior to that when the race was run over the shorter distance, Joanne ran the top time of 0:57.6 in 1991.
